"One of the many reasons why I like Carter as a teacher is because she is very open minded about the type of music she writes and teaches."

BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Carter Dewberry completed her DMA in Chamber Music Performance and M.M. in Cello Performance from UCLA. She received her B.M. in Cello Performance from Western Michigan University and also holds a B.A. in French with minors in Women's Studies and Philosophy.
Carter enjoys a diverse performance career as a soloist, orchestral, and recording musician. She has toured Europe multiple times, studied at Encore and Meadowmount many summers throughout her high school and undergraduate years and has competed in and won numerous concerto and chamber music competitions throughout the United States. Today, she regularly performs live and records for television, film, and independent music projects.
Carter’s passion is instilling in others a love for the cello. She begun learning the instrument when she was 8 years old and has taught since age 11 when she founded a summer music camp in her hometown for young string players. In high school, she worked with her orchestra teachers to throw a daylong cello festival for cellists throughout Western Michigan. In college, she participated in numerous cello festivals and led several ensembles. She is the founder of the OC Cello Choir, a community cello ensemble.
In Carter’s more than 25 years of experience teaching individual and group cello lessons, she has adopted a positive yet rigorous philosophy of instruction. She remembers that whatever piece or ensemble may be the desired outcome of lessons, the most important part of being a cellist is retaining a love for playing the instrument.
Today Carter maintains a private cello studio in Orange County and also offers group and individual music theory instruction. Carter utilizes the suite of Beauvoir Music Makers online music products in her theory instruction.
Fun Fact: One of Carter's primary teachers, Bruce Uchimura, studied with the legendary cellist Leonard Rose. Below is a video Carter recently discovered (thanks to a new student's enthusiastic research) on Leonard Rose giving a lesson. This video offers valuable insights into this great master's technique. Thank you to Steven Honigberg for compiling (and agreeing to share) this video!
